Chartered in 1875, The Merchants National Bank of Winona is the largest independent bank in the area. The building was designed by William Gray Purcell, one of the major figures of the American prairie school of architects. Mr. Purcell was a protégé of Louis Sullivan. The bank building was featured in the July 1965 issue of 'The Architectural Review' and many students of architecture visit the bank annually to study its unique design. The bank consistently lives up to its slogan 'The Bank That Service Built.'
