Had a wonderful time at Rice's; the food is delicious—you must try it! Amarillo, pop. (1960-61) approx. 150,000. Elev. 3,676 ft., coolest summer nights in Texas, is the trade and amusement center of the Golden Spread region, an area as big as Ohio. Spanish conquistadors searched here for the Seven Cities of Cibola. A noted cowtown, Amarillo is now the center of the world's largest helium supply, rich oil and gas fields, wheat, cattle, cowboys, and millions of irrigated acres. The city has scores of ultra-modern motels, multi-million dollar shopping centers, and Western wear shops. Nearby attractions include beautiful Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the Panhandle-Plains Museum, America's Famous First Boys Ranch on the Canadian River at the site of Tascosa, a ghost town, and the foot of Boot Hill Cemetery.
