Kokernot Field
Alpine, Texas
Diamond in the rough—Kokernot Field earned its reputation for its unique beauty and players who performed here. The Cowboys were one of semi-pro baseball's elite in the 1950s. Featuring Satchel Paige, the Browns and White Sox drew 6,000 fans to an exhibition game in 1951. Later, stars such as Norm Cash (from nearby Sul Ross University), Gaylord Perry, and Jim Fregosi passed through town. For three years, the Red Sox operated a Class D sophomore league team in Alpine. But Herbert Kokernot never liked pro ball, keeping the field mainly for college, semi-pro, high school, and Pony leagues. Some of the ornate ironwork is seen here, plus the "06," symbolizing Kokernot's cattle ranch. The park's founder died in 1987, but his creation remains an oasis. This view: 1991.
